Established in 1733, Savannah is the oldest city in the State of Georgia and serves as the county seat of Chatham County. The city was the British colonial capital of what was known as the Province of Georgia, and later became the first state capital of Georgia. Savannah served as a critical port city during the American Revolution and Civil War; today the city is an industrial center and Atlantic seaport. Savannah is also Georgia’s third-largest metropolitan area and the state’s fifth-largest city.
Savannah attracts millions of visitors each year who come to enjoy the city’s historic buildings and architecture. The city is the birthplace of Juliette Gordon Low (founder of Girl Scouts of America) and also is home to the Georgia Historic Society, the First African Baptist Church (one of the oldest African American Baptist congregations in the United States), and the Central of Georgia Railway roundhouse complex that contains the oldest standing antebellum rail facility in America.
Savannah has a beautiful Downtown area that includes the Savannah Historic District. The Savannah Victorian Historic District has 22 park-like squares that make the area one of the largest national Historic Landmark Districts in America and was designed in 1966 by the U.S. government. James Oglethorpe designed the original town plan for Savannah and the city still retains the layout known as the Oglethorpe Plan. Savannah also served as host for the sailing competitions that took place during the 1996 Summer Olympics that were based in Atlanta.
Savannah sits in Chatham County, Georgia. The 2010 Census placed the county population at 265,128, making Chatham County the fifth-most populous county in the State of Georgia, as well as the most populous county in Georgia outside of the Atlanta metropolitan area. In 2013, the population had increased to 278,434 residents. Savannah is the county seat and largest city. Chatham County was one of the original counties formed after Georgia’s incorporation and was officially created on February 5th, 1777. It was named for William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham.
